EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ — Vanderbilt senior Brad Tinsley sunk a 15-footer with 4.5 seconds left to beat the Oregon State University men's basketball team Monday night in the TicketCity Legends Classic championship game.
Tinsley, who prepped at nearby Oregon City High School, was able to get his shot off over 5-foot-8 sophomore guard Ahmad Starks.
The Beavers (4-1) called a timeout after Tinsley's cold-blooded jumper, but weren't able to get off a quality look at the buzzer. Junior guard Jared Cunningham, who entered the game second in the nation in scoring (26.0 points per game), went the length of the floor, but his off-balance attempt from just outside the key drew no iron.
The loss was Oregon State's first of the season. The Beavers beat the University of Texas 100-95 in overtime Saturday night at the IZOD Center.
Similar to the Texas game, Oregon State showed resilience in the game's waning moments. The Beavers never led in the second half and trailed by eight with just over 10 minutes remaining before going on a 16-8 run to knot things at 60.
From there, Vanderbilt's Jefferey Taylor scored inside to give the Commodores a two-point lead with 1:46 remaining before Starks tied it at 62 with a fadeaway with 33 seconds left.
Devon Collier led the Beavers in scoring with 19 points on 8 of 11 shooting. Starks was second on the team with 16 points, but took 19 shots.
Eric Moreland grabbed eight rebounds, scored eight points and blocked three shots, but did miss two free throws with 1:26 left.
Cunningham, fresh off back-to-back 30-point-plus performances, scored just nine points on 3 of 10 shooting. His six steals were somewhat negated by six turnovers.
Oregon State will stay on the East Coast for the rest of the week before taking on Towson in Maryland on Saturday.
