I am (was) extremely nearsighted as a child. I was told to avoid excessive near-point use of my eyes so as not to make my eyes even more nearsighted, more rapidly. That made sense to me, and spent more time outdoors, not reading, etc., than I otherwise would have. But my eyes got worse and worse.
