Junior Scott Sakaguchi won with a pin in Saturday's dominant victory over Stanford.
Junior Scott Sakaguchi, currently No. 8 in the nation in the 149-pound weight class, is the athlete of the week after going 3-0 in this past week, scoring 13 points total in three meets.
Sakaguchi’s dominant week started last weekend when he recorded a major decision against No. 25 Airforce and then won by decision against No. 13 Wyoming two days later.
The weekend showing was especially impressive considering Sakaguchi was coming off of an ankle injury that kept him out since Dec. 16.
The team captain continued his hot run with a pin against Stanford in what head coach Jim Zalesky called an “overmatched” contest.
Sakaguchi not only earned a 3-0 mark for the week, but also sparked the entire No. 10 Oregon State team, propelling them to three wins.
Sakaguchi and the 5-3 Beavers (2-1 Pac-12) will try to keep things rolling as they travel to the East Coast to take on Lehigh and No. 8 Cornell this coming weekend.
After getting out to a mediocre 2-3 dual record to start the season, Oregon State — thanks in part to Sakaguchi — has gotten back to their winning ways after the undefeated week.
